Govt may take address off the passport, change colour to orange
|If that happens, it will no longer be a valid proof of address
The Ministry of External Affairs is considering a series of changes to the Indian passport. These include dropping the last page—the one with the address and details of a guardian. If this goes through, the passport will stop serving as a proof of address.
“The decision to keep the last page of the passport blank was made to protect the citizens’ details,” Surendera Kumar, the undersecretary of policy and legal matters at the Consular, Passport and Visa Division of the ministry told Hindustan Times. The details, albeit not printed, will be saved on official systems and remain accessible for immigration officials and concerned agencies by scanning a barcode present.
The ministry is also considering a possible change in the colour scheme of passports. At present, most passports (expect for diplomats and government officials) have a blue cover. This includes people who require an emigration check before leaving the country (ECR category). To make immigration and screening more efficient, orange coloured passports may be issued for individuals in the ECR category.
Both decisions, if and when confirmed, will not affect current passport holders. The changes will apply only when you go in for a renewal.
An orange Indian passport?
As per norms laid down by the International Civil Aviation Organisation—a United Nations body—passports can only be in shades of red, blue, green or black. An orange passport, if it does come through, may be derived from the red, but still stand out from the other maroon/burgundy/red passports from around the world.
Ironically, UK is contemplating reverting its passport colour from burgundy to blue to celebrate Brexit.
